Five Ways to Nourish Your Skin

You love your skin, but do you know how to protect it and nourish it? Well, you better learn fast, because your skin is what people see first when they see you! And it has to last you a lifetime. So, it is best to start taking care of it as early as possible.

Skin is the waterproof, insulating shield, guarding the body against extremes of temperature, damaging sunlight and harmful chemicals. Our skin is designed to fight infections and the harmful effects of pollution, and its ability to do so is determined by its pH level. The pH level determines how acidic or alkaline a substance is. Human skin is slightly acidic, with a pH level of about 5.5; as a result, our skin is able to ward off basic infections.

So, how do you go about caring for it? Check out these basic skin care tips for that gorgeous, smooth, shiny exterior.

  • Stay hydrated

It might not sound too exciting, but staying hydrated is half the battle won when it comes to skin care. Your body is 60 per cent water. Drinking six to eight glasses of water every day is essential for maintaining your body’s hydration levels. Start your day with a large glass of lukewarm water. You can add a lemon and some honey to it for better results. Do not have your breakfast immediately after. Wait for at least 45 minutes before eating. Continue to have water at regular intervals during the day.

  • Use sunscreens

Smart girls know that the UV rays of the sun are harmful for the skin. Before stepping out in the sun, make sure you apply sunscreen lotion. The ideal Sun Protection Factor (SPF) for Indian skin is 15. But remember to apply the lotion at least 15 minutes before stepping out. Don’t forget to apply it on all exposed skin, including your hands, arms, feet and legs.

  • Eat right

Yes, you love your paani-puri and your samosa, your fried chicken and your pizza, and all those tasty namkeens. But you’ve got to limit your intake of all the fried stuff. Fried foods mess up your skin, give you pimples and spoil your health. Include the right kind of snacks in your daily intake. Go for fresh fruits and vegetables, instead of burgers and soft drinks. Fruits and vegetables are full of antioxidants that help to protect skin from the damage caused by free radicals. You might not look too hep munching on a carrot, but it will do wonders for your skin!

  • Use moisturizers

Follow a skin care regimen at the end of each day. Start by washing your face with a mild facewash; follow it up by using a good skin toner. Then apply a liberal dose of mosituriser all over your face and neck. If you include your hands and feet, you will get better results. Use a light moisturizer if you are in your teens and twenties; use one with more emollients as you grow older.

  • Exercise

Regular exercise not only keeps the flab away, it also does great things to your skin. Working up a good sweat increases circulation and the flow of nutrients to the skin. It also helps to get rid of dirt and oil. Result: healthy, shiny skin
