Pause before you go for hair straightening

It is a fact – if you have straight hair, you long for curls and waves. And if you have wavy, curly hair, you pine for straight hair. Hair straightening is a common procedure nowadays. It is not very difficult, nor is it so expensive anymore. But is it good for your hair? Could it be causing a lot of harm? Experts say yes.

Take a look at these side effects of hair straightening. They might make you think twice before you go for it.

  • Excessive drying

Dry hair is the most common side effect of hair straightening. This is because hair straightening involves the use of chemicals and heat. Both of these will certainly rob your hair of its natural oils. The elasticity of your hair will decrease, which will make it feel brittle and coarse.

No matter what type your hair is, straightening will have the same side effects. Any kind of heat will destroy your locks. If you do want to use a hair straightener at home, do not use it every day. To avoid damage, use it at a low or medium setting. Do not use when your hair is wet.

  • Frizziness

Dryness can also lead to frizziness. You will get hair that seems to stand up, rather than hang down! Little flyaway hairs will pop up all over your head, making your hair look less than beautiful. Low humidity can make it worse. To tame frizziness, always use a conditioner on the bottom half of your hair. You can also use a hair mask.

  • Breakage

When your hair becomes dry from all the straightening, it is very likely to break and fall before its life cycle is over. Both heat tools and chemical relaxants will result in breakage. Your hair strands will become weaker and weaker, ultimately resulting in breakage.
You are also likely to get split ends, which look ugly. You can get split ends from over brushing, blow drying, and handling wet hair as well.

  • Dullness

Another negative side effect of straightening is dullness. Dry hair does not have shine, and it does not look healthy. Dullness is caused by the lack of natural oils from the scalp. Without enough moisture, the hair will look bland.

  • Physical irritation

The worst thing about hair straightening is the formaldehyde gas. You may not know it, but some hair smoothing products release formaldehyde when heated. This includes flat irons as well as blow dryers. After repeated exposure, formaldehyde can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and lungs.

So, think twice before you do something you may regret.
