The basics of specialized skin care

Most of you must be taking basic care of your skin. You know, the cleansing, toning and moisturizing routine. While that might be good enough when you are very young, by the time you step out of your twenties, you need to have a specialized skin care routine.

You cannot just slap on any cream you lay your hands on and use the first facewash you see in the aisle in the supermarket. This is the time when you need to really understand your skin and use products accordingly. The sooner you start a targeted regimen, the more you will delay ageing and sun damage.

Here’s what you need to know.

  • Identify the products that suit you

When you are in younger, you can experiment with any product you fancy. A bit of this and a dash of that won’t hurt your skin. But as you grow up, you have to use products that agree with your skin type. For instance, if you have oily skin, you need to eschew moisturizers and foundations that have too many emollients. Stick to light, non-greasy creams.

If, on the other hand, you have dry skin, it can only get more and more dry as the years roll on. Switch to a richer moisturizer, go for oil massages, use hydrating face masks.

  • Apply products in the right order

Do not slather on products mindlessly and haphazardly. Take the trouble to learn the order in which you should use products. For instance, start your routine with targeted serums/gels, then apply moisturizer and then your sunblock. Just leave a minute between each layer. In case you want to apply any make-up, it should go over the sunscreen.

  • Incorporate anti-ageing care in your routine

Many women think they need to start anti-ageing products after they have aged. Nothing could be more wrong. You must incorporate anti-ageing care in your overall routine when your skin is still young and healthy. That is the way to keep it younger longer. Switch to products containing retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and so forth, and be diligent about their use.
