Want gorgeous nails? Follow these five tips, and flaunt your talons!

Long, polished nails! Nothing is sexier than well-maintained, healthy nails, with the right kind of nail colour on them. The good news is that you do not have to go to salons and parlours for expensive manicures to achieve that killer look. Just follow a simple regimen and note down some basic nail care tips. A well-balanced diet and good personal hygiene can give you salon-worthy nails at a fraction of the cost. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Take care of your cuticles

The first thing to remember is never to cut or trim your cuticles. They are a barrier for bacteria and harmful substances. If your cuticles are breached, it is like opening a doorway for infections.  What you need to do is to moisten them with warm olive oil (or any other good oil, like almond oil or coconut oil) and gently push them back. If you must, trim away only dead pieces of skin.

  • Use good quality nail varnish

Nail polish is full of chemicals – it contains toluene, dibutyl phthalate, dimethyl and diethyl phthalates, camphor, formaldehyde, etc. If you buy cheap nail polish, chances are it will contain more harmful substances. Always go for a good brand, and do not apply nail colour very often.

  • Use good quality remover

The most common nail polish remover is acetone. Being a chemical, it is harsh on skin and nails, and tends to dry them out. However, you will need to use a remover if you want to remove the last vestiges of your previous nail colour. The thing to do is to make sure you do not use nail polish remover too often. And when you do use it, make sure to wash your nails, dry them and then moisturize them. Apply your new coat of nail polish only after 10-15 minutes. This gives the moisturizer time to hydrate your hands and nail beds. Alternatively, you can use an acetone-free remover.

  • Shape your nails properly

Nails are fragile and you need to take care of them. As they begin to grow, start shaping them using sharp scissors. It is not a good idea to use nail files. They induce small cracks in your nails, and this ultimately results in your nails chipping and breaking. You can use a nail file for final shaping. Aim for a conical shape and give the go-by to the square nail-look. Not only does it look ungainly, it goes against the basic shape of your fingers.

  • Apply nail polish properly

Lastly, learn how to apply nail polish. Start with a base coat. Let it dry. Then apply a primary coat. Let it dry. Apply a secondary coat. Let it dry. Finish off with a top coat.

And voila! Your nails are sexy and beautiful.
