Ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee defines style

It is not every day that one gets to hear what Sabyasachi Mukherjee thinks of politics, luxury, Bengal, style, and things of that sort.

The ace designer recently attended the India Today Conclave East 2017, and talked about everything under the sun.

Talking about fashion and its roots in Bengal, Sabyasachi said, “I always say luxury can never be born of subjugation, it is born of arrogance. Bengal is not a state, it a country of its own. You might not have a penny in your pocket, but you’ll always have pride.”

Dwelling on the state of affairs in the country, Sabyasachi said, “The country is divided. We have confused desis, who don’t know that too much Indian is bad. I love India, but I am not sure if I want to be Indian. “

Commenting on the topic of body-shaming, he had words of wisdom to share — “Before internet, you saw your sorrows to be just yours. Now you come across women like you, and that gives confidence, and influences consumer behaviour. Earlier it was about fashionable women, now it’s about stylish women. Style is more about you, rather than the world.”

And then there were his views on women and sex as well. “This is the land of Kama Sutra, I don’t understand the hypocrisy behind sex. Everyone does it. Men should be okay with women having breasts. Men don’t have to appreciate it, but they must acknowledge it.” Phew!

Dwelling on his definition of style, he made a powerful statement. “I think style is about a woman who is 5’1 and wears flats to a party. Style is about confidence.”

And that was not all. He spoke about sensuality as well. “If you leave nothing to the imagination, it is pornographic, if you leave something, it is erotic, if you leave everything, it is sensuality. We believe in sensuality and not pornography.” Double phew!
