Five women designers making waves

When it comes to women fashion designers, the names that crop up are generally Ritu Kumar, Ritu Beri, Reena Dhaka, Bhanu Athaiya, and the like. These legendary names aside, there is plenty of talent out there.

Here’s a look at five women designers who are making waves today.

Masaba Gupta

Daughter of the talented actress, Neena Gupta, Masaba is a graduate from Mumbai’s SNDT Women’s University, having done a course in Apparel Manufacture and Design. She has her own label, named after herself. Debuting as part of Lakme Fashion Week’s Gen Next show for up-and-coming designers, she specializes in lightweight fabrics and quirky prints. Bollywood stars Bipasha Basu and Shilpa Shetty have worn her creations. Masaba has won awards such as the 2012 L’Oreal Paris Femina Award for Best Emerging Designer, and PETA India’s Most Talented Designer of 2013.

Payal Singhal

Daughter of well-known garment manufacturer Dinesh Singhal, Payal Singhal is an astute businesswoman as well as a designer. She was awarded the Shoppers Stop Designer of the Year Award at the age of 15. Having launched her self-titled label in 1999, she produces made-to-order designs, ready-to-wear bridal outfits and other contemporary clothing. She has retail outlets in Mumbai, Hong Kong, the Middle East, and the US.

Priyanka Ella Lorena Lama

Priyanka Ella Lorena Lama is one of India’s youngest designers. This talented fashion designer launched her pret-a-porter collection under the label P.E.L.L.A. at the Lakme Fashion Week Gen Next Summer/Resort 2015 show. She is a graduate in Apparel and Fashion Design from Bangalore’s National Institute of Fashion Technology. Her designs are influenced by the Japanese Wabi-Sabi school of thought that promotes the idea of beauty in imperfection.

Kanika Goyal

Kanika Goyal is a graduate from New Delhi’s National Institute of Fashion Technology, as well as New York’s Parsons School of Design. Before launching her own label in 2014, she worked for high-end brands such as Marchesa, Bibhu Mohapatra and Prada. Specializing in both women’s wear and men’s wear, she describes her style as “provocative minimalism”. She made her Lakme Fashion Week debut with her Summer Resort 2015 collection, “Creatures of the Night”.

Shabina Khan

Shabina Khan is a very well-known fashion designer, working mainly for the Hindi film industry. She has designed costumes for over 30 films since starting her career in 1988. Having designed costumes for A-list actors and actresses such as Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit, she has movies such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Vivah, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun to her credit.
