How to identify the shape of your face

The shape of your face is an important determinant of the kind of hairstyle that will suit you, the type of sunglasses you should flaunt, the kind of earrings that will look good on you, and so forth. Most faces fit into one of the six categories — round, square, long (or oblong), heart, diamond or oval.

But by just looking into the mirror, you may not be able to figure out what kind of a face shape you have. You have to do some number crunching. Here is what you need to do.

  • Start with the forehead. Measure across your forehead at the widest point.
  • Move on the cheeks and measure the widest length across your cheekbones.
  • Next comes the jaw. Measure your jawline at its widest point. This is generally just below the tips of your ears.
  • Finally, measure the length of your face, starting at the hairline and ending at the lowest point of your chin.

Now, for the results.

Heart-shaped face

Heart-shaped faces are wider at the forehead and gently narrow down at the jawline. Some people with a heart-shaped face may have a pointy chin. The best example is Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon.

Square face

Square faces are easy to determine. The width of their forehead, cheekbones and jaw is almost the same. Square faces generally come with sharp, angular features, including a sharp jawline. Angeline Jolie is one of the best examples of a square face.

Round face

The width of the forehead, cheekbones and jaw is almost equal in round faces as well. However, as opposed to square faces, the jaw is slightly rounder, as opposed to angular. The overall features are soft. The difference between a round face and a square face lies in the angles. Square faces have strong, angular features, whereas a round face has soft features. Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukherjee, Mila Kunis have round faces.

Diamond face

This is not a very common face shape. People with diamond faces are widest at their cheekbones. Their jawline and forehead are the same length, but narrower than the cheeks. Jennifer Lopez could be considered to have a diamond-shaped face.

Oblong face

Oblong face shapes are longer than they are wide. The face looks visibly long. The best example is Hollywood actress Sarah Jessica Parker.

Oval face

This is the classic face. The length of the face equals one-and-a-half times the width. The best example of an oval face is yesteryear Hindi film heartthrob, Madhubala.

Here’s another rough and ready method to determine your face type.

Stand in front of a mirror and visualize your face divided into three horizontal parts — your forehead and eyes, your cheekbones and nose, and your lips and chin.

If no part of your face is particularly wide, you have a round face.

If you can trace a perfect egg shape around your face, you have an oval face.

If the middle part is considerably wider than the other two parts, and you have a narrow forehead and a narrowing jaw line, you have a diamond face.

If you have a wide forehead, flat cheekbones and a narrow chin, you have a heart shaped or triangular face.

If you have a wide forehead and wide jaw, and the middle part is not jutting out, you have a square face.

If you have a wide forehead and wide jaw, and your face is very long, then you have an oblong face.
