Mandeep Nagi, the talented NIFT graduate has designed for many international markets and has undertaken designing textile products for restaurant chains etc. She is the partner and Design Director at Shades of India. The award-winning entrepreneur talks to Sasha Madan about herself and her company.


What is your educational background?

I completed my graduation from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi in 1991. Prior to that, I obtained a degree from Delhi University in Bachelor of Science. I now mentor many students from design institutes for their projects/internships.


When did you start Shades of India? What is this company about?


I started the company with my husband David Housego in 1994. Shades of India is known for its creative products in textiles, exploring new textures, prints, and handcrafted techniques.


What is your functional expertise?

My main skills and expertise include design in textiles for home furnishings, as well as apparel and textile based accessories. I have designed for international markets where my company has shown products in major European trade fairs such as Maison-et-Objet in Paris, and the New York Gift Show and have won several design awards at these shows and in India.


Apart from design, what are your hobbies?

Apart from designing, I love to travel and have a keen interest in reading books.


Where is the large customer base of your company?

My company’s main base is in stores like Harrods, Heals, Selfridges, Debenhams, House of Fraser, ABC Carpets etc.


Tell us about your achievements

I launched an apparel range under the label Mandeep Nagi for the Good Earth. I am also the Creative Director for the international label Shades and White. This has won an international reputation for its attention to fine detail and for its loose, flowing forms. I have also undertaken projects for designing textile products for hotel chains, private residences and government houses.
