Shah Rukh Khan honoured with Crystal Award at Davos

It’s not every day that you see a Bollywood superstar at economic or political gatherings, but when it comes to superstar Shah Rukh Khan, anything can happen.

This year’s World Economic Forum (WEF), the annual business, economic and political event held in Davos, saw King Khan being presented the Crystal Award for his humanitarian work involving rehabilitation of acid attack survivors through his non-profit organization, Meer Foundation.

Along with SRK, British singer-songwriter Sir Elton John and Australian actress Cate Blanchett were also presented with the award. Cate received the award for her work with people who have fled their homes, while Elton John was honoured for his charitable work done via his AIDS Foundation.

While delivering his acceptance speech, Shah Rukh touched upon the need to break barriers and come together as a global family. “We, the powerful, need to get out of the way, to pick the barriers apart, the ones that give us names and races and colours and hierarchies,” he said. “That is what I have learned from my beautifully scarred women,” he added, referring to the acid victims.

“To disfigure a woman by throwing acid on her face is, to me, one the basest, crudest acts of subjugation imaginable. At the source of it lies the view that a woman does not have the right to assert her choice. And yet, each of the women I met, I found within them, the courage to move on with their lives and to reject the idea of victimhood. What was done to them only made them braver and stronger and more able to free themselves to make the choices that everyone around them said they could not make or should not make,” he said to thunderous applause.

After delivering his speech, the actor asked Cate Blanchett and Sir Elton John for a selfie. “There, I have embarrassed my children,” he said, causing ripples.

Shah Rukh Khan, one of Hindi cinema’s most globally recognized faces, is very serious about his charitable work. His foundation supports female victims of acid attacks and major burn injuries, providing them medical treatment, legal aid, vocational training, rehabilitation and livelihood.

The Crystal Award is given by the WEF to artists who make a positive change in society.

What’s next, SRK?
