Bollywood stars bid adieu to Shashi Kapoor

Shashi Kapoor, who passed away on Monday, December 4, was accorded a state funeral in Mumbai.

The last rites took place on Tuesday, even as the city battled Cyclone Ockhi.

Wrapped in the Tricolour, the late star was cremated at the Santa Cruz crematorium, with the Mumbai Police giving him a three-gun salute. Accompanied by several family members, his body was first taken to Prithvi Theatre.

Shashi Kapoor’s son Kunal, nephews Randhir and Rishi (who rushed back to Mumbai from a film shoot), Rishi’s son, Ranbir, and several other Kapoors were present.

Several Bollywood stars turned up to pay their last respects. Amitabh Bachchan (Shashi Kapoor’s co-star in several movies), his son Abhishek, Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, Saif Ali Khan, and many others were present.

Bachchan visited the family the previous evening, along with Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya. Rani Mukerji and Kajol also visited the Kapoors.

Bachchan posted an emotional tribute to his friend on his blog, writing “With men like Shashi Kapoor around, I stood no chance.”

The President, several politicians, cricketers and stars such as Simi Garewal, Kamal Haasan, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Hrithik Roshan, Madhuri Dixit and Priyanka Chopra took to Twitter to offer their condolences.
