Have you danced to Jimmikki Kammal yet?

First it was Kolaveri Di, and now it is Jimmikki Kammal.

We are referring to the Malayalam song that has taken the internet by storm. It is not always that a song in a South Indian language goes viral in India and becomes a huge hit. But then, some songs manage to break free of the barrier and become a sensation.

The Tamil song, Kolaveri Di, from the psychological thriller 3, was one such instance. The song broke out in 2011 and just about everybody was singing it and dancing to its beat. It didn’t matter that not many understood even a word!

Jimmikki Kammal is the latest chartbuster from the South, and it has several celebrities as well grooving to it. The latest to jump on to the Jimmikki bandwagon is Abhishek Bachchan, who recently tweeted that Jimmikki Kammal was his current obsession, and he has been listening to it on a loop. He added that it is his new favourite and he can’t stop listening to it.

Here’s the text of his tweet: “Current obsession: Jimikki kammal. Can’t stop listening to it!! Awesomeness. #jimikki #newfav”

Entammede Jimmikki Kammal, or simply Jimmikki Kammal, is a song from the 2017 Malayalam film, Velipadinte Pusthakam. It has been composed by Shaan Rahman, and sung by Vineeth Sreenivasan and Ranjith Unni. Taken from various folk songs, it has been penned by Anil Panachooran. The song is about a boy who talks of his father stealing his mother’s earrings and his mother downing brandy to drown the sorrow.

The song was released as a promo video for the film in August. It became an instant hit and several dance video covers appeared on Youtube and Facebook.

In September, a second music video of Jimmikki Kammal was released on YouTube, which featured Mohanlal and other actors of Velipadinte Pusthakam dancing to the song. This music video also went viral, notching up almost 4 million views.
