Dangal crosses Rs 2000 crore, a first for any Indian film

Dangal is continuing to make new records – the film recently touched a historic high of Rs 2000 crore, a feat that no other Indian movie has ever been able to achieve. The sports biopic reached this new landmark just six days after it crossed the $300-million mark. It continues to be screened in theatres across China, where it has become extremely popular.

The Dangal story

The Aamir Khan-starrer was released in December 2016, and has had a phenomenal run. It is the highest-grossing sports movie of 2017 across the world. In Aamir’s own words, the reason the movie has become so huge is that people connected on an emotional level with the story, the characters and the moments. It made them realize what their parents went through. It’s a very emotional reaction. That is what has made the film really work.

Dangal is based on the real-life story of wrestler Mahavir Phogat, whose role is played by Aamir Khan. The story revolves around how he trains his daughters, Geeta and Babita Phogat, to become international wrestlers after he is forced to give up wrestling in order to look after his family. The film depicted how gender stereotypes can be broken and girls can be viewed as equal to boys.

The movie is directed by Nitesh Tiwari, who has become a household name in India by now. In a very short span of time, Dangal has become the biggest hit of India, and the world’s fourth-highest grossing movie in 2017. Dangal is produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Aamir Khan Productions, and UTV Motion Pictures. It was made on a budget of just Rs 70 crore. When you calculate the profits, they are indeed mindboggling!

After a very successful run domestically, the film was released in China and Taiwan, where it did even better than India. The Chinese have simply fallen in love with Dangal and all its characters. Though Aamir Khan was already well-known in China, he has now become a huge star in that country. Even Chinese leaders have hailed the film, calling it brilliant.

We hope it continues to do well and inspires more and more people.
