Five memorable performances of Aishwarya Rai

One fails to describe Aishwarya Rai – not only is she one of the most beautiful personalities to have graced the screen, she has also been Miss World. In fact, prior to becoming Miss World, she was a model. After having made her debut in Hindi films, she also acted in some non-Hindi movies.

Here we take a look at some of her most memorable performances.

  • Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)

This was one of the finest performances of Aishwarya Rai, who is still remembered for this role. Aishwarya was Nandini in this Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, who is the daughter of a renowned classical singer. One day, Sameer (Salman Khan) comes to her house to learn music from her father. The two fall in love, but her father objects as he plans to marry her to Vanraj (Ajay Devgun). How the love triangle turns out forms the rest of the story. Though all the main characters played their parts quite well, Aishwarya stole the show with her looks and performance.

  • Devdas (2002)

This was yet another Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie, and yet another love triangle. Asihwarya plays Paro, who is in love with Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan). However, they cannot marry as Devdas’s family raises objections. Devdas goes into depression, while Paro has to be content with marrying a widower. Devdas, meanwhile, visits the brothel of Chandramukhi (Madhur Dixit), who falls in love with him. Aishwarya’s performance was hailed by all, and she won several awards for her work in the film.

  • Guru (2007)

This Mani Ratnam film was loosely based on late industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani’s life. Aishwarya played Sujata, a young girl who ends up marrying Guru (Abhishek Bachchan). The rags-to-riches story had several ups and downs, and Aishwarya did a wonderful job playing the devoted wife to Guru.

  • Raavan (2010)

This was a Mani Ratnam movie, starring Aishwarya, Abhishek Bachchan and Vikram in the lead roles. Aishwarya played the role of Ragini, the wide of policeman Dev Pratap Sharma (Vikram). She is abducted by Beera (Abhishek Bachchan), a dacoit. Dev leads a search party for her, and also attempts to capture Beera. Beera and Ragini start to develop feelings for each other, but she is already married. Once again, Aishwarya’s performance was hailed by audiences and critics, though the film was declared a flop.


  • Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)

This Karan Johar film was a bit controversial because of the presence of Fawad Khan, a Pakistani actor. However, the film did release and did very well. Aishwarya made an appearance only after the interval as a poetess who starts a relationship of convenience with Ranbir Kapoor, the protagonist of the film. Looking beautiful, she put life into the character.
