Five memorable performances of Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor made his Hindi film debut with Sawariya, the Sanjay Leela Bhansali fantasy film. Though the film did not fare as well as was expected, Ranbir Kapoor was immediately noticed as a young man with great promise. He has done a number of off-beat films since Sawariya, showing great acting skills.

Here is a look at some of his best performances:

  • Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year

Most actors play safe roles in the initial part of their career, preferring romantic or action movies. But Ranbir experimented with an off-beat film like Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year, and wowed the audiences. He played the role of Harpreet Singh Bedi, a young man who is written off as a good-for-nothing non-achiever. He is humiliated as a loser. But he persists in his belief that you do not need to give bribes to secure contracts. Ranbir played the role to perfection, doing full justice to the character.

  • Barfi!

This Anurag Basu film told the story of a deaf and mute young man who has to face many battles in his life. Ranbir Kapoor played the role of Barfi, or Murphy, to perfection. Barfi falls in love with Ileana D’Cruz, but she ends the relationship, realizing its difficulties. Barfi then meets the rich heiress, Jhilmil Chaterjee, who is also autistic. The story follows the love triangle of the three. Ranbir’s portrayal as young man with disabilities won him rave reviews from audiences and critics alike.

  • Rockstar

Director by Imitiaz Ali, Rockstar was a turning point in Ranbir Kapoor’s life. Playing the role of a troubled singer who is in love with Heer Kaul (Nargis Fakhri), Ranbir stood out for his screen presence and his ability to pull off a difficult role. The music of the film made it even more popular. The tragic ending only made Ranbir even more popular.

  • Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani

This movie was directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Karan Johar. A romantic comedy, it provided Ranbir the platform to play the role of Kabir, a cool, hip guy who wishes to travel the world. A nerdy, studious girl, Naina (Deepika Padukone) falls for him, but does not reveal it. The movie has many twists and turns, but ends on a positive note for Kabir and Naina. Ranbir played the role of a carefree young man with such precision that he is still remembered for it.

  • Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

This was one of Ranbir Kapoor’s finest performances, though much of the attention went to the leading ladies Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. But it was Ranbir’s understated performance as a love-struck rich young man in London, who keeps waiting for Alizeh (Anushka) to reciprocate his love.
