Mr Perfectionist celebrates “The Secret Superstar” success

Aamir Khan has reasons to celebrate – The Secret Superstar, produced by him and wife Kiran Rao — is setting record books on fire in China. The film has already earned almost Rs 760 crore at the Chinese box office, and it is not done yet.

So, Mr Perfectionist hosted a get-together on Wednesday evening in Mumbai to celebrate the phenomenal success of the film, inviting the entire cast and crew of the low-budget movie. “We are really happy that The Secret Superstar has been so successful all around the world; all credit goes to Advait (Chandan) for wonderful writing and direction that he has done,” the 52-year-old superstar said, while speaking to a news agency.

Aamir Khan’s Dangal co-star, Zaira Wasim, played the lead role in the film, while he appeared on the screen for all of 30 minutes. The film was released in China in January, and within just two weeks, it started shaking up the box office.

The Secret Superstar is a story about a small-town girl, Insia, played by Zaira, who has big dreams. Her father is dead against her aspirations, while her mother is very supporting. But she rebels against regressive societal norms and becomes a successful singer, with help from a has-been musician, played by Aamir.

“We are so thrilled and happy. We made this film with a lot of love and effort and it connected with the audience; that was the big thing for us. The kind of amazing love and support the film is receiving, especially in China, I don’t think any of us expected that. I saw Chinese audience emotionally connecting with the film,” Kiran Rao was quoted as saying.
