Oprah Winfrey delivers rousing speech at Golden Globes

Talk show queen and actress Oprah Winfrey made history at the Golden Globes Awards as delivered a rousing speech in which she hailed the women who came out with their stories of sexual harassment in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. Oprah became the first black woman to be honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and the 15th woman overall, since it was first handed out in 1952.

The Cecil B. DeMille Award is an honorary Golden Globe Award bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”.

Oprah talked about her humble background, her rise to fame, and her friends who have stood by her all these years. She also predicted a time when women won’t have to say “me too” ever again.

She celebrated the legions of women all over the world who work silently and put up with harassment.

“Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell. And this year, we became the story. But it’s not just a story affecting the entertainment industry. It’s one that transcends any culture, geography, race, religion, politics, or workplace. So I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue,” she declared.

Oprah, 64, has become a cultural phenomenon over the past 30. She was born into a poor home in Mississippi. Through sheer grit, she made a name for herself in the entertainment industry, becoming one of the most popular television news and talk show personalities. In fact, over 30 years, Oprah became the face of television talk shows. She also starred in, and produced, feature films, and started her own network.

Her celebration of the legions of women who have called out sexual harassers — and her dream of a day “when nobody has to say ‘me too’ again” — gave rise to speculations that she might run for President in 2020.

That would be a pleasant change after Donald Trump!
