Will The Secret Superstar match Dangal’s superlative overseas run?

The Secret Superstar has completed a month in the domestic circuit. It is expected to wind up with a total domestic collection of about Rs 85 crore.

At first glance, it might not seem much, considering the super success of Golmaal Again, which has minted Rs 200 crore so far, or the earlier Aamir Khan-Zaira Wasim phenomenon, Dangal.

But when it comes to profitability, The Secret Superstar has made a killing, considering it was made on a budget of just Rs 15 crore.

Going by worldwide collections, Golmaal Again has made Rs 300 crore, whereas The Secret Superstar is at just Rs 123 crore.

But there is a twist in the story.

Aamir Khan has several important overseas territories to look forward to. These include China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, where Aamir is hugely popular. Dangal made a fortune in these territories, raking in Rs 1,315 crore, with mainland China accounting for the vast majority of that total.

Other than Dangal, other Aamir Khan movies, such as PK and Dhoom 3, too have done very well in these territories.

It is quite reasonable to assume that The Secret Superstar will also rake in the moolah in these territories. But it is unlikely that it will be able to match the phenomenal success of Dangal. Trade analysts feel, however, that it may overtake Golmaal Again when it comes to total worldwide collections.

Let’s wait and watch.
