Whiteheads robbing you of your sheen? Here’s what to do

Some days, you notice funny white specks on your skin. They look white pinheads, and they are ugly. These are whiteheads, formed when the oil beneath the skin breaks through the surface. If the oil breaks through to the surface, the result is a whitehead, but if the oil becomes oxidized, it changes from white to black. That is a blackhead. In medical language, whiteheads and blackheads are called comedones.  A comedo that is closed at the surface of the skin is called a whitehead, while the one that is open is called a blackhead.

There are several natural ways to remove whiteheads. Check out these popular methods.

1) Lemon juice

Mix some lime juice with groundnut oil and make a solution. Apply this mixture on the affected areas. Leave the mixture on for 15 minutes, and then wash it off. Alternately, you can cut a lemon in half, and juice it. Rub it on the skin for a few minutes. Follow twice a day. You will soon start seeing results.

2) Steaming

The process of steaming helps to open up the pores of the skin, which makes it easier to remove whiteheads. Bacteria and dirt are also removed during this process, making the skin cleaner. You can boil water in a steamer, or just a large bowl. Place your face over the container, and cover your head with a towel. Allow the steam to hit your face for 10 minutes. Remove the whiteheads by pressing with the tips of your fingers or using a comedo remover. Once done, wash your face with cool water.

3) Oatmeal

Oatmeal contains a number of compounds with moisturizing, cleansing, and antioxidant properties. It exfoliates the face, and helps remove dead skin and bacteria. You can powder some oatmeal and mix it with a cup of curd. Apply this paste on the skin, and leave it on for about 15-20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and then with cold water to close the pores. Do this twice a week.

4) Sandalwood powder

Sandalwood has several beneficial properties. It is an anti-bacterial, and also helps remove excess oil from the skin. This ensures that the appearance of whiteheads is reduced. Mix some sandalwood powder and rose water together to form a paste. Apply the paste on the face leave on for about 10 minutes. Wash off and pat dry.

5) Sugar scrub

Sugar is very good for exfoliating. Using sugar as a scrub can effectively remove dead skin cells, as well as dirt and bacteria underneath the skin.

You can mix a small amount of honey with sugar to form a coarse paste. Apply this paste all over the face. Gently massage the paste over the face. Leave it to dry. After 10 minutes, wipe it off with a sponge or a towel. Rinse off remaining residue. Repeat the process once a week.
